Alitalia, founded in 1946, was Italy’s iconic national airline, based in Rome-Fiumicino. It enjoyed international success, particularly during the 1960 Olympics, before falling into chronic financial difficulties. After years of crises and rescue attempts, it ceased operations in October 2021, replaced by ITA Airways.

Alitalia’s Douglas DC-8-62, registered as I-DIWN, was a long-haul four-engine jet, nicknamed the “Super 62,” delivered to the Italian airline in the late 1960s. As part of the 60 series, it offered an extended range. This specific aircraft is best known for being involved in a landing accident in New York on September 15, 1970.
