Air India, India’s national airline founded in 1932 by J.R.D. Tata, is a major historical player that was recently acquired by the Tata Group in 2022 after decades of public ownership. Based in Delhi, it connects India to the world with a modernized fleet and has ordered a record number of new aircraft. It was the first Asian airline to introduce jets in 1960. It operates a mix of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, with more than 190 aircraft as of May 2025 serving numerous domestic and international destinations, and has been a member of Star Alliance since 2014.

The Boeing 747-400 registered VT-ESP (MSN 27214/1034), nicknamed “Ajanta,” was an iconic wide-body aircraft in Air India’s fleet, in service from June 1994 until its retirement in February 2020. It played a key role in long-haul operations, particularly on the Mumbai-London Heathrow route, before being scrapped in Mumbai after a career spanning more than 25 years. The VT-ESP was among the airline’s last 747-400 passenger aircraft, as the carrier replaced its “queens of the skies” with newer, more fuel-efficient twin-engine jets.
