Founded in 1919 as SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aéreos) by German and Colombian pioneers, Avianca is the second-oldest airline in the world still in operation. A pioneer in South American aviation, it merged in 1940 to become Avianca, establishing itself as a cornerstone of air travel and connectivity across the continent. The airline began its transatlantic expansion to Europe (notably to Madrid, Paris, and Frankfurt) in the 1950s and introduced its first jet aircraft in the 1960s. In 2009, Avianca merged with the Salvadoran group TACA, strengthening its presence in Central America. It joined the Star Alliance global network in 2012.

The Douglas DC-3 with registration number HK-122 was an iconic aircraft for the Colombian airline. Originally built in 1942 as a C-47, it was owned by both Pan Am and Avianca. It became the oldest airworthy DC-3 in Colombia, passing through the fleets of Sadelcapu and Aliansa. The aircraft ended its service in July 2011 in Honduras, destroyed by fire after a forced landing caused by an overload resulting from illegal cargo.
