TAROM Airbus A310-325/ET / YR-LCA

Inflight 200 / 1:200 / IF310RO0526

TAROM Airlines (Transporturile Aeriene Române) is Romania's national airline and its oldest carrier. Based at Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) in Bucharest, it operates a fleet of about a dozen aircraft and serves approximately 50 destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Founded on September 18, 1954, the airline grew by building on the foundations of Romanian aviation established as early as 1920. Throughout its history, TAROM has been a pioneer in European aviation, operating its first transatlantic flight in 1966 and completing a 47,000-km round-the-world flight in 80 hours in 1969. In 1974, it also operated the first direct flight to Sydney via Calcutta. A member of the SkyTeam global alliance since 2010 and of IATA since 1993, the airline is 95% owned by the Romanian government. Facing stiff competition from low-cost carriers, it now focuses primarily on its regional and international routes.

The Airbus A310-325 with registration number YR-LCA (serial number 636) is a large twin-engine jet built in 1992 for TAROM. This aircraft, operated by the Romanian national airline, is best known for having experienced two major pitch-related incidents involving the autopilot. On September 24, 1994, during the approach to Paris-Orly Airport, the crew misinterpreted the behavior of the autopilot system. The aircraft suddenly climbed sharply, followed by a stall. The pilots managed to regain control and land safely. Finally, on March 1, 1995, while operating the Chicago-Amsterdam flight, the Airbus was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet near Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec. The autopilot disengaged, and the aircraft began a very rapid climb, reaching as high as 38,500 feet at a critical angle of attack. The aircraft triggered several stall warnings before the crew managed to stabilize it and divert it to Montreal.

The Inflight 200 series includes collector's models designed for collectors by collectors.
