SAS Scandinavian Airlines is Scandinavia’s leading airline, founded as an international consortium bringing together Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. It was established in 1946 and pioneered commercial air routes by opening the first trans-Arctic route over the North Pole (connecting Copenhagen to Los Angeles). It is a co-founder of the Star Alliance alongside Lufthansa, United Airlines, Air Canada, and Thai Airways. Facing financial difficulties and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, the airline is restructuring and undergoing a change in ownership (notably with the arrival of Air France-KLM and the Danish government), leading to its transition from Star Alliance to SkyTeam in 2024.

The Airbus A320 with registration SE-RJE (serial number MSN 1183) is a medium-haul airliner that flew for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines). In April 2017, it was initially delivered to the British airline British Midland Airways (bmi) under the registration G-MIDW. In February 2012, it was officially added to the SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) fleet under the registration SE-RJE. It was transferred to SmartLynx Estonia (registration ES-SAP), then stored in Marana, Arizona, starting in April 2020 before being scrapped.
