Mexicana de Aviación is Mexico’s oldest and most historic airline, founded in 1921. It went bankrupt in 2010 before being relaunched as a public carrier in 2023. Founded on July 12, 1921, as Compañía Mexicana de Transportación Aérea (CMTA), it initially transported mail and payroll to the oil fields. It was the first airline in Latin America to introduce jet aircraft in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It became mired in serious financial problems, debt, and labor disputes after its sale to the Posadas Group, and the airline suspended all flights on August 28, 2010. The Mexican government acquired the brand and entrusted its management to the military (SEDENA), relaunching operations under the name Aerolínea del Estado Mexicano on December 26, 2023.

The Boeing 727-64 with registration number XA-SEL (serial number MSN 19256/355) was a three-engine airliner owned by the Mexican airline Mexicana de Aviación. On June 4, 1969, during a scheduled domestic flight from Mexico City International Airport (MEX) to Del Norte Airport (NTR) near Monterrey, Mexico, and while on approach in heavy rain, the crew made an unauthorized left turn instead of the planned right turn, at excessive speed. The aircraft struck the side of Cerro del Fraile mountain at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters. All 79 people on board (72 passengers and 7 crew members) were killed; among the victims were Mexican politician Carlos A. Madrazo, tennis star Rafael Osuna, and architect Jorge González Reyna.
