South African Airways (SAA) is South Africa’s national airline, founded in 1934, and one of the oldest on the African continent. Its international expansion (in the 1940s and 1950s) led to the launch of routes to Europe (notably London) and the introduction of new aircraft. SAA plays a crucial geopolitical role. Due to the refusal of many African countries to grant overflight rights, the airline acquired special versions of long-haul aircraft (such as the Boeing 747SP) to fly around the continent. After 1994, SAA joined the Star Alliance in 2006, but faced significant financial difficulties in the 21st century before resuming operations in a restructured form.

The Boeing 747-244B (a specific version ordered by SAA, with the code “44” designating South African Airways as the customer at Boeing), registered as ZS-SAP, named Swartberg after a mountain range in South Africa, enabled SAA to connect South Africa to Europe, Asia, and the Americas during the golden age of commercial aviation.
