Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) was the leading international airline in the United States and an icon of the 20th century (1927–1991). A pioneer in aviation, it popularized travel by seaplane (clippers), introduced commercial jets such as the Boeing 707 and wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, and dominated global routes with luxury service before disappearing due to financial difficulties and deregulation. Pan Am remains a symbol of aviation’s golden age, represented by its iconic “blue globe” logo and its flight attendants in their iconic uniforms. The airline also laid the foundation for modern air travel.

The Boeing 747-121, registered as N656PA (serial number 20351/127), was an iconic wide-body aircraft delivered to the American airline Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) on June 18, 1971. It was known successively as the “Clipper Live Yankee,” “Clipper Empress of the Seas,” and finally “Clipper New Horizons.” In January 1984, the aircraft sustained substantial damage during an aborted takeoff at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) following a loud explosion in one of its engines; fortunately, none of the 407 people on board were injured. It was withdrawn from the Pan Am fleet, sold to the cargo and charter company Evergreen International Airlines, and re-registered as N483EV. In 1992, it was permanently taken out of service and stored in Marana, Arizona, before being completely dismantled.
