Air Zimbabwe is Zimbabwe's national airline, originally founded as Air Rhodesia in 1967 before adopting its current name in April 1980 upon the country's independence. Based at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare, it has faced numerous financial difficulties, strikes, and periods of restructuring.

The Boeing 767-2N0/ER with registration number Z-WPF (serial number 24867 / line 333) is an iconic wide-body aircraft for this airline. Delivered new to Air Zimbabwe in October 1990 and equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines, it has come to symbolize both the airline’s resilience and its setbacks, having been alternately grounded, returned to service, and at times seized abroad due to the company’s debts (notably at London-Gatwick). The aircraft had a long career punctuated by several periods of layup (notably between 2012 and 2014, and then starting in 2017) before resuming scheduled flights or being occasionally leased to other operators in the region. It was also involved in a few minor incidents, such as engine problems (surges) that were handled in flight without any major incidents.
