Northrop T-38C Talon

USAF Thunderbirds, no.1, 1970s

Hobby Master 1:72  HA5415

The U.S. Air Force aerobatic demonstration team, Thunderbirds, initially flew the T-38 Talon as part of their training and support aircraft lineup. The T-38, a twin-engine, high-performance jet trainer, was used by the Thunderbirds from 1956 to 1973. Its sleek design and agility made it an ideal choice for pre-demonstration flight training and support roles. The team later transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II and eventually to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Despite its retirement from active Thunderbird service, the T-38 remains a vital trainer for Air Force pilots and continues to serve in various roles within the U.S. military.

Northrop T-38C Talon

Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname "White Rocket". The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane.
