In May 1983, the 128th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) of the Georgia Air National Guard marked the end of an era with the retirement of its Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs. F-105F #63-8299 received commemorative markings and was given the call sign "Peach 91" as part of a ceremonial farewell held at Dobbins Air Force Base. The event honored the squadron's proud history flying the F-105 since the early 1970s. Known for its rugged performance and Vietnam War legacy, the Thunderchief had become a symbol of tactical power. "Peach 91" was flown to Patuxent River NAS MD as one of 18 F-105Fs and Gs to be barged to Aberdeen Proving Ground for use as targets for missile tests.

Republic F-105F Thunderchief

Designed as a replacement for the F-84F Thuderstreak, the F-105 first flew on October 2, 1955. This Mach-2 capable aircraft was used for strike bombing during the Vietnam War. It was armed with a cannon and missiles and was also designed to carry a nuclear weapon. The single-seat F-105 was the largest single-engine fighter ever to serve with the USAF, and could deliver a greater bomb load than any of the 10-man strategic bombers that served during WWII. Despite these impressive statistics, the F-105 was also the only US aircraft in history to be removed from combat because of high rates of attrition.
