McDonnell RF-101A Voodoo

USAF 363rd TRW, #54-1512, Udorn RTAFB, Thailande, 1965

Hobby Master 1:72 HA9305

The 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW) operated the RF-101A Voodoo in 1965 as a key part of its tactical reconnaissance mission. The RF-101A was a supersonic photo-reconnaissance aircraft, adapted from the F-101 fighter, equipped with advanced cameras and sensors to gather intelligence. In 1965, the 363rd TRW used the RF-101A extensively for high-speed, low-level reconnaissance over hostile territories during the escalating Vietnam War. Its speed and range allowed it to capture critical imagery while evading enemy defenses. Despite some limitations compared to later models, the RF-101A played a vital role in providing timely intelligence to US forces.

McDonnell RF-101A Voodoo

Designed to meed a USAAF requirement for a long-range turbojet powered fighter, the F-101 was first flown (as the XF-88 prototype) on October 20th, 1948. Its initial mission as bomber escort was modified during development to include that of all-weather interceptor, nuclear fighter-bomber and photo reconnaissance aircraft. Reconnaissance variants saw extensive use during the Vietnam war while interceptors remained in service with several Air National Guard units until 1982. Ultimately, the Voodoo's carreer was rather short-lived although it did help pave the way towards the highly successful F-4 Phantom II that replaced it.
