The first E-2D flew in 2007 with new electronics, communications, new Rolls Royce engines, a glass cockpit and radar. VAW-121 "Bluetails", an Airborne Early Warning squadron that was established in 1967 and based at NAS Norfolk. After 37 years of operating the E-2C Hawkeye the VAW-121 began to use the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. E-2D c/n AA18 serial 168599 was manufactured in 2015. During 2018 VAW-121 was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln CV-72. In 2019 they sailed to the Middle East.

Grumman E-2D Hawkeye

Designed as a replacement for the E-1 Tracer aircraft, the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye made its first flight in 1960. This tactical airborne early warning aircraft is the only aircraft capable of carrying a large rotating dome, which houses the antennas for its long-range radars. Used primarily by the US Navy, the E-2 provides airborne surveillance and early warning of enemy anti-ship and air attacks. Sometimes called "The Hummer" because of its distinctive engine sounds, the E-2 is one of two propeller-driven aircraft currently operating from aircraft carriers. The E-2 is still being modernized, with the modern E-2D taking its first flight in August 2007.
