LAN Chile (now known as LATAM Airlines) was founded on March 5, 1929, by Chilean Captain Arturo Merino Benítez under the name Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica, before becoming Chile’s national airline. In 1946, the airline began international flights to Buenos Aires, later expanding to North America and Europe. In 1989, the Chilean government began privatizing the airline. In 1990, the fleet was modernized with long-haul aircraft such as the Boeing 767, and the airline expanded its regional operations. In 2012, it merged with the Brazilian airline TAM to form the LATAM Airlines Group.

The Boeing 767-284/ER with registration number CC-CDH is an iconic wide-body aircraft that left its mark on the history of the Chilean airline LAN Chile (now LATAM Airlines) during the 1990s. This aircraft symbolizes the airline’s transition toward privatization and the modernization of its intercontinental long-haul network. The aircraft made its maiden flight under the Olympic Airways flag (the Boeing customer code 84 refers to this Greek airline), but its subsequent history varied. It was leased out for short stints, notably to Royal Brunei Airlines in 1991. The aircraft was fully reintegrated into the LAN Chile fleet in November 1994, adopting its famous registration CC-CDH. It became a mainstay on routes connecting Santiago, Chile, to major international hubs such as Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX) and Frankfurt (FRA). After leaving Chile in 1996, it returned to Aeroméxico before flying for other operators, including Viva Macau (B-MAV), and ultimately ended its operational life under the U.S. registration N716AN with the AerSale group.
